  International Youth Day 2008

National Youth Coalition on Climate Change Nepal (YCCCN)

With the initiative of the APSS a national level National Youth Coalition on Climate Change Nepal (NYCCCN) has formed whose members are consisting of youth CA members (under age of 30), APSS itself, various youth and student organizations and Free Students Union (FSU) which will use their networks and strengths, political affiliations, grass roots connections and expertise to disseminate the required information and organize mass media awareness campaign, rally and dialogue on climate change with various stakeholders.   

What is NYCCCN doing to observe the International Youth Day on the theme on Climate Change?

1. Speech and Quiz Contest on Climate Change for school and college students

The NYCCCN will conduct Kathmandu valley wide speech and quiz contest on climate change among five inter higher education institutions and five inter secondary level schools separately. The objective of the speech and quiz contest is to educate the contestants and youth-students on key climate change issues and realize themselves for crucial actions to climate change. 50,000 school and college students are participating the contests. 2. Educative and Awareness Raising Mass Media Campaign on Climate Change

To raise awareness on climate change and minimizing its threats, and to broaden the participation of youths, the NYCCCN are ready to nationally broadcast live discussions and forums and awareness building jingles and slogans on climate change through 10 local FM stations and Radio Nepal. The radio discussions will be in ‘Q&A’ and ‘call-in’ format which will be expected to exert public pressure and draw commitments from influential political leaders on the issue that deeply concern to climate change impacts to key Nepal’s development areas i.e. tourism, water resource etc. The experts, government and youth activists will be taken in radio discussions. 3. Awareness Building Public Rally, Petition Submission to Government and Planting Program

To observe the International Youth Day on the set theme by the UN, the NYCCCN will organize nationwide public rally and planting program for raising awareness on climate change. Thousands of young people with play cards, banners, slogans and leaflets on climate change will walk along the main streets of the main cities of the country covering all five development regions. This will increase the level of knowledge on climate change, of rally participants and observers alongside the streets.
To review the efforts done and formulate the policy on climate change and environmental protection, the NYCCC will submit a petition to the head of the government. The petition will have important policy recommendations and way outs to minimize the threats of climate change.
