Kathmandu: Accusing the political parties of not being responsible on the major agenda — drafting the constitution within the stipulated timeframe — caretaker Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today underscored the role of youths in defending democracy.
“Democracy is bearing the brunt of trust deficit among political parties,” said Nepal at a report hand-over programme organized by the Association of Political Science Students here today.
“Nepali youths should use this opportunity to make a prosperous and inclusive new Nepal thereby reminding the political leaders of their duties and responsibilities,” maintained Nepal.
It has been almost two months since Nepal resigned from the post of the prime minister and there have been five rounds of voting in parliament to pick a new prime ministers, unfortunately, invariably failing each time.
“The current political deadlock has defamed the country’s image before the international community and created rage against political parties,” said Nepal. “The CPN-UML had earlier proposed for national unity to initiate discussion on peace process, to iron out differences among parties and to ease the political environment but the parties did not pay heed to it.”
He reiterated that the UCPN-Maoist should turn itself into a civilian party by detaching itself from arms and weapons.
“Youths have a key role to play to save democracy because they will be victimised if we fail to establish peace and democracy in the country,” said UML leader Pradeep Gyawali.
In the programme, Rajendra Prasai, president of the APSS, had briefed the audience about the report on ‘Youth students’ Participation in the Constitution Writing Process of Nepal’.
